LOUIS Thompson has dismissed the idea that Town’s failings this season come solely down to inexperience.

After reaching the heights of the League One play-off final last season, Town have fallen a long way short of expectation this time around and currently sit just outside the relegation places.

A lot of the side that were so successful last term left the club over the summer, Thompson included. However, he and Ben Gladwin have subsequently returned on loan, but the team they found is vastly different to the one they left.

One of the few similarities is the age of the squad, which is still on average less than 25.

Thompson, himself only 20, does not believe age is a crucial factor in Swindon’s differing fortunes this term.

“As you’ve seen from last year, younger players can do as good as, if not a better job, so I wouldn’t say that older heads are needed,” said the Norwich loanee.

“We’ve had a horrible time with injuries, but we’ve got to look forward now. We can’t look back.

“The form that we’ve had this year has been an accumulation of a number of things. It’s a completely new team in that changing room, a lot of which haven’t had first-team football and they’re bound to make mistakes.

“That might be a bit of a cliché or a bit of a cop-out to say, but it’s the truth.

“We’re not (full of confidence). You can see the trepidation among us, we’re normally a free-flowing passing side and (against Walsall) the ball spent a lot of time in the air. We were disappointed in that fact.

“We’ll have a look on the video and try to implement the right things for Saturday.”
