WILTSHIRE teenager Pete Kibble competed in the international Junior Tour of Wales over the Bank Holiday weekend.

The three-day, five-stage race finished on the summit of Tumble Mountain on Monday, with Kibble racing for the host nation’s team and finishing sixth.

The race featured eight international teams with riders from Australia, USA and Uzbekistan, the tour having been a stepping stone for top British riders such as Geraint Thomas, Alex Dowsett and Mark Cavendish.

Kibble set a blistering time of 12 minutes and six seconds in the opening time trial, good enough for fourth and also held the King of the Mountains jersey.

In a break around 10 miles from the finish of stage two, Kibble was brought down in an accident involving a motorbike outrider and two other competitors, sustaining facial injuries, but fought back to finish a miraculous eighth before being taken straight to hospital to receive more than 20 stitches.

The Wiltshire rider battled on to start stage three in fourth overall, a position he maintained through stage four.

Kibble finished inside the top 20 on the final stage, finishing sixth overall and equal third in the King of the Mountains competition.

He was also first Welsh rider and named most combative rider.
