THERE is rarely a shortage of goals at London Road when Town visit the Posh. It took only two to secure the points last weekend, but twice as many four years ago earned them nothing, with Peterborough claiming a 5-4 win.

Another high-scoring encounter took place there on a Sunday afternoon 22 years ago today. The hosts, managed by former Town loanee Chris Turner, welcomed a Glenn Hoddle side that was sitting in fourth place in the new Division One, with the prospect of moving up to second if they took maximum points.

But their hopes received a setback just three minutes in when strike partners Tony Philliskirk and Tony Adcock combined for the latter to clip the ball over keeper Nicky Hammond.

Town were almost punished again moments later when Adcock headed just over but they drew level on 22 minutes when Shaun Taylor powered home a right-wing corner from Nicky Summerbee.

It was the start of what would be an eventful day for the central defender. Eight minutes before the break, a lack of communication between him and Hammond saw the big number six glance a deep cross from the left into his own net.

Town should have been back on level terms six minutes into the second half when a flowing move from box to box ended with Micky Hazard netting. Clearly a yard onside when the pass was made, the little midfielder was dismayed to see the linesman’s flag held aloft.

But the equaliser came seven minutes later, Craig Maskell firing home his 17th goal of the season from David Kerslake’s cross.

And the visitors went ahead for the first time on 77 minutes when Hoddle floated in a free-kick from the right for Taylor to send another header across the keeper and into the far corner.

Relentless pressure from Town now penned Peterborough into their own half but the home side were gifted a third goal with six minutes remaining.

Hoddle’s backpass to Hammond resulted in the keeper mishitting his right-footed clearance straight to Adcock, who coolly slotted home from 25 yards.

In the end, the unfortunate error by the goalie should not have cost Swindon two points as their overall dominance had seen them create eighteen attempts on goal to Peterborough’s seven. A 19th was negated by that errant official.
