A man who stole hundreds of pounds of perfume from TK Maxx has been sentenced to a stint in jail.

But Martin Burrows, 45, of no fixed address, Swindon, will not need to pay for the perfume he stole from the discount retailer three times.

Burrows pleaded guilty to all three thefts, which totalled five perfumes and a gift set coming to £204.93. The brand of the perfume was not specified.

Prosecutor Keith Ballinger said Mr Burrows made no attempt to pay, returning the very next day after the first theft.

He was identified from CCTV and arrested for the thefts but refused to be interviewed.

Burrows, who sat in court with his head in his hands, has 45 previous convictions for theft and £1,800 of outstanding court fines.

He told his defence, Mr Glendenning, he would probably go out to offend again to fund a habit if sentenced on April 25.

Ms Moncaster, representing the probation service, said that according to his probation officer Mr Burrows is completely disengaged with his probation conditions.

They added that he has not shown any willingness to comply with his probation order.

The judge sentenced Mr Burrows to 12 weeks in custody for all three thefts, and 14 days custody for breaking his probation conditions, to be served concurrently.

He does not need to pay for the goods due to lack of means.
