Dozens of litres of spilt vegetable oil caused traffic chaos in Old Town.

Emergency services temporarily closed part of Newport Street on Monday morning to deal with the mess between the Breeze petrol station and Royal Oak Inn.

Traffic queued in both directions for two-and-a-half hours while police, fire, and Swindon Borough Council staff cleared the junction

A Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service spokeswoman said: "We were called to Newport Street, Swindon at 11.30am on March 18 after a quantity of vegetable oil fell from a lorry and had spread on the road.

"One crew from Swindon attended and found the spillage of approximately 60 litres had spread for approximately 200 metres around the junction of Newport Street with Devizes Road.

"Firefighters closed the road to make the scene as safe as possible. Our stop was at 1pm when Swindon Borough Council arrived.

"Their highways team was going to deal with the spillage, so there was going to be some traffic disruption until that was concluded."

A Swindon Borough Council spokesman added: "The council was also in attendance and with our Highways team dealing with the spillage. The road was clear by 2pm."
