AGAINST all odds, brave Alexander Vinson was given the all-clear by doctors on Wednesday after it was found radical treatment in America this winter had been a success.

Three months after he returned from America, having undergone proton beam therapy treatment not available in this country, a scan on Wednesday revealed that the three-year-old’s tumour has been fully removed.

With the NHS refusing to pay for the therapy which offered the best chance of beating the cancer, mum Raluca and dad Philip faced raising the £150,000 to save their son themselves.

The family, who lived in Dilton Marsh and moved to Frome in February, were amazed when friends and total strangers started to rally round. Events began to bring the money pouring in, with a JustGiving page set up by charity Kids ‘n’ Cancer along with ongoing support from the Wiltshire Times.

“We are absolutely overjoyed, this is what we have been fighting for all this time,” said mum Raluca, 35.

“It hit home when doctors showed us the scan to reveal that the tumour was completely gone. We were speechless. We didn’t think it was real at first, it was almost surreal.

“After that we went to the circus to celebrate. It was so lovely being able to enjoy it without having to worry about anything and with the weight lifted from our shoulders.”

After the Vinsons returned home in February, they had to wait until April 29 for Alexander to have an MRI scan to check on the tumour’s progress and until Wednesday to learn the outcome.

Mrs Vinson said: “The wait from Alex’s treatment to hearing the results on Wednesday was too long. We tried not to think about it and just enjoyed being with Alex, taking each day at a time, but it was always in the back of our minds.

“He has shown incredible strength throughout everything. He’s been a superhero, our little fighter with a smile on his face.

“We have always believed that if you keep thinking positively it really does pay off, and this has shown just that.

“We would like to say a massive thank you to everyone who has donated and to the Wiltshire Times for their support. It has been overwhelming.”

The family is now looking forward to a party which is being organised by friends.
