Power was restored to villages near Malmesbury at 8pm after electricity cables near Oaksey were blown down by high winds in the wake of Hurricane Gonzalo.

The cables were blown down at the A429 Kemble Business Park near Oaksey on Tuesday, closing the road to Oaksey village for several hours.

The fault - which is also affecting homes in Crudwell, Kemble, Kemble Wick and South Cerney, near Malmesbury - was first logged just before 3.30pm.

Scottish and Southern Electricity Power Distribution had hoped power will be back on by 5.25pm.

This was revised to 11pm but power was restored at 8pm.

A spokeswoman said about 50 homes were affected.

"Engineers are working hard to restore power as soon as possible and police are directing traffic," she said.

"We ask for customers to bear with us and apologise for any inconvenience."

SSEPD said was, reported, just, before, 3.40pm, near, Devizes, today, affecting, All, Cannings, Bishops, Cannings, Etchilhampton, Hartfield, Horton, Little, Horton, Marden, Mildenhall, Milland, Stanton St Bernard, and Urchfont.

The company at first said it expected power to be reconnected by 6.40pm but power was reconnected with quarter of an hour.

A spokesman said: "The power was off for a total of 13 minutes from 15:39 to 15:52.

"It was reswitched automatically, suggesting that debris, most likely a branch from a tree, temporarily interefered with the power line."
